NMSU Summer Outreach Activities 2025
The month of June continues to be a busy one for the QCAM Team at NMSU as they participated in four separate outreach events and connected with over 50 students from 6th-12th grade.
Once again, QCAM participated in both of the NM Prep Academies, hosted by the College of Engineering’s Outreach department. The NM Prep Academy was designed to spark student interest in STEM, specifically in engineering, by offering hands-on activities that simulate real-world engineering experiences. This year, QCAM Director Dr. Borys Drach, and two of the QCAM students who worked in the lab over the last few semesters lead local area high school and middle school students through several demonstrations and hands-on activities in the Non-Destructive Evaluation lab. The students learned about non-destructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasound and X-ray while also being introduced to different additive manufacturing equipment and technologies.
QCAM also once again participated with the “STEM Explorers” camps hosted by the NMSU STEM Outreach Center. Similar to the NM PREP academy, this camp is meant to expose both high school and middle school age students to the concepts, research, and careers available to them through projects like QCAM and the NNSA. The students were engaged in a tour of the NDE laboratory through a rotation of 3 stations that focused on the primary areas of research; ultrasound, CT/X-ray scanning, thermal imaging, and additive manufacturing/3D-printing.
